Charles Fritz Bogar was born on Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland to Louis Charles Bogar and Hermine Fliege Bogar. His father was the son of a Hungarian Reformed minister, and his mother was the daughter of an artist. His parents grew up in immigrant families with Hungarian being spoken in the Bogar home and German in the Fliege household. Fritz’s parents met in Boston while his father was at M.I.T. and his mother was studying nursing. Fritz is their oldest child, being born while his father was as an Ordinance Officer (US Army) at Aberdeen . A year later, sister Elizabeth was born, and eight years after Elizabeth, sister Karoline.
Fritz’s early years were spent in Canada, where his father was helping in the development of the first nuclear power plant in North America . Later the family moved to Bethel Park, in the south hills of Pittsburgh where Fritz grew up and attended high school. Fritz attended Boston College where he double majored in bio-chemistry and psychology. Immediately following graduation, he entered Princeton Theological Seminary where he received M.Div. and Th. M. degrees. At Princeton he met Ann Clay Adams and they married after her graduation in 1982.
Fritz’s first call was to First Presbyterian Church in Muncie, IN as assistant pastor. He was ordained on November 1, 1981 in his home church, Hamilton Presbyterian Church, near Bethel Park. After serving in Indiana , Fritz followed Ann to Iowa , where he served an interim at First Baptist Church , Ames , Iowa ; stated supply at Kamrar Presbyterian Church in Kamrar , Iowa ; interim pastor at Urbandale United Church of Christ in Des Moines , Iowa , and as pastor at St. John United Church of Christ in Melbourne , Iowa . Son Gabriel was born while serving St. John’s . In 1992, Fritz and Ann Clay moved to Lexington , KY where Fritz continued to supply churches until he began serving as the chaplain at Centre College. There he also did some adjunct teaching. In addition, he was adjunct at Lexington Theological Seminary and served as the coordinator of worship there. He was named parish teacher at the Danville Presbyterian Church, as well.
In 1995, Fritz joined Ann Clay in Decatur, GA serving interim and supplies in Greater Atlanta Presbytery: Norcross Presbyterian Church, Norris Lake Presbyterian Church, South Fayette New Church Development, the Fund for Theological Education and a 5 ½ year interim at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Snellville. In 2004, he was called to the John Knox Presbyterian Church as pastor. Since 1996 Fritz has served as the leader for Columbia Theological Seminary’s Faith and Film monthly event.
